Have you ever seen the viral video of the musical Kinky Boots? In this video, comedian Lee Chang-ho performs as his alter ego, musical actor Lee Ho-kwang, recreating a song from Kinky Boots. The surprisingly high-quality stage set, costumes, and performance contributed to its viral success on social media. This video also resulted in a surge in views for the original Kinky Boots video, leading to a reverse viral phenomenon. The origin of this trend can be traced back to a reel that emerged earlier this year. In it, actors sing a quirky yet funny song with the line, “I majored in Muk-jjipba during my university days.” This video began to spread across social media. Just when it seemed that this trend was fading, the musical Chicago took the baton and continued the momentum. One of Chicago's signature songs, known as the "Ventriloquist Song", gained popularity, and the theme song of the main character, Billy Flynn, started to dominate people's feeds. This article will explore the thoughts of students from Gachon University regarding the musical short-form trend. The students from Gachon University who participated in the survey all indicated that the musical short-form trend would have a positive impact on musicals. Here are their detailed opinions: Jeong Min-jun (Department of Semiconductor and Electronic Engineering) "Nowadays, people tend to find musicals unfamiliar and perceive a high entry barrier, making them difficult to approach. However, with content related to musicals, I believe it can serve as an opportunity to spark interest in genre." Hong Kyung-jun (Department of Computer Engineering) "It introduces aspects I was previously unaware of, which helps me develop an interest." Cha Min-ha (Department of Acting Arts) "I believe there will be more opportunities to engage with less popular plays and musicals. However, I also have concerns that the existing issue of star casting may become more pronounced. For example, actor Choi Jae-rim, who has gained recognition for his in Rita, Chicago, and Kinky Boots, has been cast in all five performances occurring simultaneously, which has sparked controversy." Through this, we have briefly examined what students' think about the forming short-form musical trend. When synthesizing their opinions, it appears that the musical short-form trend can serve as an effective entry point for engaging with musicals, which have a relatively high entry barrier compared to other forms of entertainment. This, in turn, could facilitate the development of the musical industry. However, there are also concerns that the industry atmosphere may increasingly rely on a small number of star actors. Despite these concerns, the musical short-form trend has the potential to lead to deeper changes rather than being merely a temporary phenomenon. Therefore, it would be good to continuously monitor these changes and look forward to the development of the musical industry.
