OTT (over the top media service) refers to a TV service that can be viewed on the Internet. Currently, there are many OTT platforms in Korea, such as Tving and Wave, as well as global OTTs like Netflix and Disney Plus. It is not possible to subscribe to all platforms, and the methods and content of OTT services vary across each platform. The methods of subscribing to and using OTT services were asked to students during the Campus Talk event. More than 80% of the students who participated in the survey answered that they are currently subscribed to an OTT platform. Of those, 60% were subscribed to 1~2 platforms, and 40% were subscribed to 3~4 platforms. Students who answered that they were not subscribed to any platform said that they consume OTT content in ways such as ‘borrowing a friend or acquaintance’s account to watch content when they want to watch it’ and ‘subscribing for a short period of time and watching it all at once.’ When asked about their favorite OTT platform, Netflix (75%) was the most frequent response. Next was Tving (50%), followed by Disney Plus and Coupang Play with the same number. The common reasons for choosing the platform were the platform’s exclusive content and self-produced content. For example, the reason for subscribing to Netflix is to consume self-produced content such as <”Squid Game”>. In addition, platform-specific features were also preferred, such as Tving ‘because of the baseball broadcast’ and Laftel ‘because it only deals with animations.’ Gachon University students were consuming various forms of content through OTT services. Students chose OTT platforms that fit their taste and needs by contributing exclusive contents and service methods. If you want to consume content but are hesitating because there are too many OTTs, it would be a good idea to check out the way Gachon University students choose OTT platforms.
