Astronomer Chaekyung Shim’s experiences for people who are unsure of their own path

Everyone’s path to their passion or long-term focus in life is different. As for the author Chaekyung Shim, she feels fascinated by astronomy. This fascination led her to eventually become an astronomer.
Astronomers Do Not Look at Stars is an essay by Shim, where she explains why she chose this career and the process of overcoming her worries about starting this journey.
To start, Shim introduces how much she was interested in space science before becoming an astronomer. For instance, when she found the star Delphinus for the first time, she felt delight like a child and remembered light, humidity, and warmth. As a student, her favorite subject was space science. Because of her interests, she studied in the department of Astronomy & Space Science. Fortunately, she was able to study and do research in space science for a long period of time, allowing her to get a Ph.D from the School of Space Research.
But there are some adversities she does not expect. One is the prejudices as a female scientist, another is the difficulty in balancing the role of mother at the same time, and the other is being constantly evaluated for her thesis. Sometimes she is confused whether she lives as a scientist or simply feels like a machine that only writes papers. Although she feels skeptical and wants to quit everything, she can not stop. She thinks resting is the same as losing her way and career. She realizes that giving up something needs a lot of courage.
After knowing this fact, she did not give up on this path. She realizes that all processes are indispensable and we should not worry about stopping for a moment. She says resting can help us think more deeply about our future, and that process helps us move forward.
Many people are confused in the process of choosing their career path. Furthermore, some people work without knowing their life’s goal. If you feel lost or want to get advice for life, I recommend that you read this book.
