Exploring the Attraction of Escape Rooms - From Psychological Immersion to Teamwork
Escape rooms have been gaining steady popularity as a unique activity, offering people a refreshing break from their daily routines. We decided to try an escape room ourselves and quickly understood why so many people enjoy the experience. The reason escape rooms are loved by many people seems to be that, beyond just simple play, they challenge participants to solve problems under immersive, stressful conditions while fostering teamwork.

Five members participated in this experience, and we chose a “mystery thriller” themed room with a medium level of difficulty. As soon as the challenge began, we were surrounded by various puzzles and tools set up in the room. With only one hour to escape, everyone quickly focused on solving the challenges. Members with more experience took the lead in solving the problems, while beginners like me and a few others found it more difficult than expected.
We could use a total of four hints, but as we got into the latter half, time became tight, and we had to use almost all of them one after another. Nevertheless, by showing our teamwork, we finally succeeded in escaping the room.
After the experience, we were highly satisfied. For an hour, we focused completely on solving problems, sharing the tension with our teammates, and naturally strengthening our bonds.
One of the most memorable moments came when we entered the second room. We were stuck in front of a clue hidden inside a framed picture, not knowing how to interpret it at first. Then, by exchanging ideas and reasoning together, we finally discovered the right approach and managed to solve the puzzle dramatically, which allowed us to move on to the next stage. This clearly showed how our team’s cooperation and shared thinking led us to success.
However, for someone experiencing it for the first time, the challenges felt quite difficult, and I regretted that I could not participate as actively because of my lack of experience.

Here are some thoughts from the participants:
Minhee Kim, Regular Reporter:
I’ve tried an escape room twice before, but this was my first time escaping. Honestly, I felt like I didn’t do much, but thanks to the members, we were able to escape. Near the end, I was nervous that we might not succeed. However, when we finally escaped with only a few minutes left, I felt incredibly thrilled.
Yujeong Jang, Regular Reporter:
I had a great time going to the escape room with our Gachon Herald members, and I was glad that we succeeded in escaping. I’ve experienced Escape rooms many times, but I think that this was the most fun. Everyone worked together and collaborated without much difficulty. I hope all of our members can go together again next time.
Dohye Kim, Junior Reporter:
I felt that searching for clues with my members made us grow closer. Especially, I realized that it is important to observe objects and to use them for logical reasoning. As I’m not very good at reasoning yet, I’d like to try an easier theme next time to improve my reasoning skills.
Seungmin Hong, Junior Reporter:
I used to like escape rooms, but this time I participated with more interest since it was a storytelling-style escape room. I think that the story made the experience more immersive. It was so much fun to have this experience together with people I like.
The reasons for recommending an escape room are clear: 1) it strengthens teamwork, 2) relieves stress, and 3) lets you spend quality time with friends. For beginners, however, it’s better to start with an easier level or use hints wisely after trying hard enough. Challenging straight into a high-level room might leave you frustrated instead of enjoying it. If you are looking for a way to escape the monotony of daily life and discover something fun, an escape room is worth a try.
