Hurricane Gonzalo Hits Bermuda, Causing Widespread (1)Power Failures

  The hurricane (2)weakened slightly before (3)its eye passed over Bermuda, but the National Hurricane Center in Miami (4)warned the island’s residents “not to (5)venture out into the (6)calm period of the eye since strong and damaging winds will return quickly.” At King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, part of the roof collapsed in the old (7)wing and (8)flooding was reported in the new wing. Bermuda’s (9)utility, Belco, reported that 30,600 homes, (10)representing more than 80 percent of the island, were (11)without power.
The storm weakened Friday to a (12)Category 2 hurricane and hit the island (13)with winds of 110 miles per hour. “Good luck — and look after each other,” said (14)Gov. George Fergusson earlier in the day as (15)heavy winds began to buffet the island, (16)whipping through palm trees as (17)a torrential rain covered the green island in a blanket of gray.
Bermuda, a (18)tourist destination and an international business center 670 miles east of North Carolina, (19)is accustomed to hurricanes. The island’s 60,000 residents were still (20)cleaning up after Tropical Storm Fay, which damaged power lines and some roofs last weekend, when emergency services agencies began broadcasting warnings about Gonzalo this week.
The last big storm to hit Bermuda was Hurricane Fabian in 2003, a Category 3 storm that killed four people and caused (21)extensive damage, (22)forcing two hotels to (23)shut down for months.
Signaling the (24)extent of damage expected this time, the island’s (25)premier, Michael H. Dunkley, said that a (26)Royal Navy ship (27)was expected to arrive immediately after the storm passed to (28)provide emergency assistance. Bermuda is an (29)autonomous (30)British overseas territory.
Although most Bermudians expected to (31)ride out the storm at home and tourists remained in their hotels, a few dozen people (32)trickled into the government’s main (33)emergency shelter, (34)set up in one of the island’s two public high schools Friday.
Among them was Cavon Trott, 57, who (35)lives on the street. Staying in the shelter “will give me peace of mind,” he said. “I would normally sleep on someone’s (36)porch.”
Some people were already (37)resigned to losing their homes. Edward Bryan Marshall, 46, lives on a sport fishing boat but (38)abandoned it for the shelter. “I came here to be on (39)solid ground,” he said. “(40)I’m afraid my boat is going to (41)get tossed around and broken up.”
At the Grotto Bay Beach Resort, tourists (42)milled around the lobby Friday morning between (43)storm updates from the hotel’s managers.
“As they told us last night, ‘(44)Hoping for the best, preparing for the worst,' ” said Sammie Hedrick, 28, from Knoxville, Tenn., who had planned a scuba diving honeymoon with her husband, Ryan Hedrick.
For Paul Crump, 60, from Britain, Gonzalo was (45)the first hurricane he had ever seen. “There is some worry, but it’s pretty cool at the moment,” he said.
